This is a provocative and impactful take on the story, one that has had me chewing on it… so thank you.

It helps me think about Jesus’ own thoughts on His cousin, i.e. of those borne of a woman none is greater… but in this new Kingdom (and new relationship to power), John is perhaps still a victim to the old, enslaved as an adversary, utterly stuck, missing the point. Which makes his execution tragic, but not redemptive. Devastating, but not salvific. Which I hate to say, as I love John-the wild-Baptist dearly…
