This was a great reflection, thank you! It is a good reminder to know that freedom is FOR something not simply from something. It made me think of the idea that we all worship something, and then live in ways that make that subject or object our worship. We are set free for worshipping God, to love God and neighbour.
Thanks for you comment, Ben. I think you're absolutely right--freedom for is formed through worshiping God and loving God and neighbor. I was just reminded today of James K.A. Smith's great book, "You Are What You Love." The title says it all.
Yeah its a great book. G.K. Beale also has a wonderful Biblical theology of idolatry called "We Become What We Worship." A similar idea is expressed in Jeremiah 2:5, where God accuses Israel, "they worshipped worthless idols, only to become worthless themselves."
